Drift back with me to the 1950's
along the bank of the White River, Arkansas County, Arkansas. It is before
daybreak, the White is flowing dark, deep and silent. Along the far bank
you hear the soft roar as the river meanuvers through the timber flats.
Listen for the "crack" yep that was it. That was the sound of
a hickory stick batting a Pin Oak acorn out to mid stream. Lanterns are
raised head high to watch as the acorn bobs, seems to edie, then catches
the current to race down stream. In answer is the White raising or falling.
and how fast .River patterns, wether, experience did yield success and
continues to aid in prediction of where the Duck are probable to feed
on a given day.
Many things have changed since
the 1950's. Cypress boats have been replace with aluminum, metal reid
calls with acrylic, paper shells with plastic, lead with steel.
Many things have not changed since
the 1950's. The mallards still come on schedule and they still concentrate
into the same areas and yes even into the same old feeding holes, rest
sloughs and praire flats as they always have.
So get your gear and come along.
You will not hear the sound of the hickory batting the acorn for time
and methods have changed but you will be able to experience hunting the
old favorite holes of the early years for these have not changed.
